About the event
This five-lecture series will delve into the ways that people in 16th century England understood diseases. From the recurring disasters of plagues to the relatively new dangers of syphilis, the people of late Tudor England faced public health crises which strongly resonate with those of the modern world. However, their means of combatting these were limited by the contemporary understanding of disease. By understanding the philosophies, practices, and challenges of the past, we can better reflect upon our own time and circumstances.
